Passenger / Freighter Aranui III Will Undergo Refit Before Resuming 2012 Tahitian / Polynesian Sailings

Aranui III was the first incarnation of cargo-passenger vessels to bear the Aranui name that was built with passenger comfort in mind. The well-appointed "Freighter to Paradise" will soon receive further enhancements including the addition of new carpeting for guest cabins, as well as new and re-upholstered dining room chairs among other improvements.

These enhancements will occur during the 2011/2012 winter season while the ship is in dry dock. The Aranui's main engine will receive an overhaul, while its hull will be repainted after it is cleaned of barnacles and algae. Lifeboats will also receive a major overhaul to ensure safety.

Highlights include Nuka Hiva, where 23-year-old Herman Melville jumped a whaling ship for an adventure which ultimately inspired highly regarded literary works such as Typee and Moby Dick, and Hiva Oa, where artist Paul Gauguin's search for an unspoiled paradise came to an end. The ship also visits the Marquesan islands of Tahuata, Ua Pou, Ua Huka and Fatu Hiva, as well as Fakarava and Rangiroa in the Tuamotu Islands.
